What happens if you plant poppy seeds
Keep them moderately well watered in hot, dry weather, and do not fertilize. You will find that once you successfully plant poppies you will see more and more of them year after year. The seed is so small and fine that the slightest breeze can carry it from one part of the garden to the other…and another. The silvery leaves and lovely blooms appear as welcome surprises each spring. Poppies are beautiful in your garden and many of us want to bring that beauty indoors. This can prove difficult because poppies can, at best, last 2 to 3 days as a cut flower.
Sometimes, they wilt right away. If you would like to use them as a cut flower, consider arranging them with some sturdier flowers or greenery to help keep their stems upright. Join our V. Mist the bed with water daily or as needed so the soil remains moist near the surface.
Poppies typically germinate within 15 days if the soil temperature is near 55 degrees Fahrenheit. Thin the seedlings so the remaining plants are 6 to 10 inches apart once they grow to a 1 inch in height. Water as needed so the top 6 inches of soil remains moist. Poppies transplant poorly so it's best to start the seeds directly in the garden.
If you must start them indoors, sow them four to six weeks before the last spring frost in your area or four weeks before you plan to transplant them outdoors for a fall and winter garden. There are many styles of decorated trees I like so I usually have 5 theme Christmas Trees. A simple Charlie Brown Style, a live one outdoors with only white lights and red bows, a tree with Horse Carousels which move up and down with flashing lights and music playing, a ceramic tree and the a live 12 foot Balsam Fir pine imported from Nova Scotia branches are further apart for larger ornaments and tinsel plus some year old fragile glass ornaments from Europe and the USA.
This one has lights, ornaments and 78, strands of tinsel each placed individually upon the limbs starting from the trunk outward, topped with a handmade angel. Upon being on tour one year in the Soulard French Quarter in a 3 story home in Saint Louis, MO, we had a tree on each floor and one upon the second floor deck and served chestnuts just roasted on an open fire for each person upon leaving.
One gentleman told me, "I will never forgive you for this! I was uncertain how to respond, so I merely smiled and continued to speak about the trees and 's home. Apparently his wife and daughter fell in love with the tinsel tree and told her husband: "From now on it is a tinsel tree. She even wrote down the steps in order to make it happen. After touring all three floors they came out as a family and he turned to me and said, "Never, ever will I forgive you. In addition to the items it only takes 24 to 72 hours to complete; but the result is so magical.
The lights reflecting off the tinsel and to the ornaments off the tinsel to create a glittering magical room for celebrating. Oddly enough I met the wife while doing some post Christmas Shopping.
She spotted me and was eager to tell me about their tinsel tree. Personally I began to expect a story about her husband being furious and ruining the season. Instead he went a step further, he would not let them see the tree until it was finished and made them wait until Christmas Eve to see the final result upon their block party that evening. He played it up and unlocked the sliding doors and let his daughter open the doors for a huge number of guests.
Apparently the story got around and the block party came along with their invited guests and families. All outer room lights were turned off with the guests standing in the dark eagerly awaiting the grand viewing Apparently there was a practice in the past that each family on a block had a party from Christmas Eve through New Years Day for their grand viewing.
Those were days of pacing life and a little more formal with traditions practiced annually The daughter opened the sliding doors for the viewing. He had apparently spent hours doing this creation of good cheer, sometimes during the night when his wife tried sneaking in to get a glimpse of the progress only to find she was locked out and told she had to wait.
They took a family photo the next day to have cards made to use for New Year's Greetings. His tinsel was strung one by one filling the branches from tree trunk to the end of each limb. Many newer ornaments and their own family treasure of glass ornaments, some the size of a small plum hanging upon the upper branches.
The postcard was kinda like receiving a statement with the only sentence written upon it saying, "Well, I accomplished the deed. Thanks for giving my wife the directions for I would never have achieved the magic and enjoyed seeing my family's eyes and faces filled with joy. Oh, how I love that time of the year.
How could I not? I was a Christmas gift myself: being born Christmas Eve morning. It really is the simple things in life that make it so joyful; except maybe a tree trimming with 78, strands of tinsel.
Poppies make up an important part of wildflower mixes , and are a particularly attractive pollinator plant to bring bees and butterflies to your garden - a great way to attract wildlife and get the kids interested in nature.
