Can you incubate eggs that have been refrigerated

After 14 days of storage, hatchability begins to decline significantly. Many many maaaaannny moons ago, when I was around 12ish, we kept eggs in the normal fridge-kept them for 18 days in fact, if not a couple more, before they went back under the hen. This is what the farmer who gave us the hen and rooster told us to do. We ended up with 18 chicks There is a slight chance some may hatch, especially if they are warmed slowly back to room temperature avoid sweating and loosing moisture then putting them under a really broody hen.

If they were your own it wouldn't be so bad, but to have to pay for poorly stored eggs I would demand a discount or your money back! Do you know how old they were? Pointed end up is OK as long as they were turned from one end to the other daily. Combined low temp, low humidity, pointed end up for the whole period and older than 1 week? I brought them home in a chilli bin with an ice-brick which I hadn't been expecting to leave in! I figure on leaving them there for a couple of days until me incubator is ready to go again.

Then I will bring them to normal room temp. The lady said if there is any problem she will happily replace them as "I haven't had any problems" although when I asked she hadn't actually tried hatching them herself, just sold them. Must read her feedback on TM I just thought I'd rather return her box of baking goods now rather than wasting a week incubating infertile eggs!

She had a better success rate that me. Maybe we are just too fussy!!! Thanks Diane and Mary - you have given me hope! I will give them a go. Thanks Sue and Luke for confirming what I thought - I will suggest to the breeder that if I candle them at 7 days and they're infertile, I would like a replacement batch.

Your prompt advice is greatly appreciated! Despite all the grim tidings I had posted earlier of watching on the Sky goggle box an Ameerycan turkey farm that kept their eggs in a cooler for 13 days prior to incubating..

Had exactly the same thing happen to us in December. Got them on TM, picked them up miles away and got home to find them fridge cold [:0].

I was VERY sceptical, but we put them under our broody anyway once they came up to normal temp! We only set 6 as we have bantams , but that's all we ever set and we usually don't get the whole 6 hatch. I have a really darling bunch of Silkies now, all colours, that I'm really chuffed with. So don't despair completely! I wouldn't despair, either.

Our ex neighbour, an old guy, put all eggs in his fridge after collecting. Poultry Waterer, 2 sizes In Stock. A: You will want to gather eggs every day, and refrigerate them as soon as they've been gathered.

This keeps them freshest. However, in the "good old days," of course, eggs were not refrigerated right away. That's surprising to many people! After all, milk that is not refrigerated will go bad, and it will do so pretty immediately In fact, when a hen is laying eggs to hatch, it can take her about two weeks to gather a clutch large enough to incubate.

At the end of that time, the first egg is still fresh enough to develop into a chick once mother hen begins incubating. It hasn't gone bad, even though it's been sitting outside in varying temperatures in the nest, definitely not under refrigeration! Make sure that all hands are washed and that the incubator has been rinsed out with bleach. Incubation and Care of Hatching Eggs. You can do candling by following these steps: Use a small bedside-sized lamp with a watt flood light bulb installed.

Cut a 2-inch hole into a thick piece of cardboard. The egg will sit on this hole. Hold the cardboard over the operating floodlight and place the egg on the hole. Observe the egg and check for a bacteria ring, a porous or cracked shell, or a growing chick with blood vessels.

Fresh eggs up to five days old can remain at a temperature in the low 60s. If the eggs must wait longer than five days before hatching, place them in the refrigerator in an egg carton. Prop the egg carton at a degree angle to increase the eggs' chance of hatching. They can stay in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Install the app. Contact us.
